Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अस्मान् अभ्यवपद्य इति माम् ऊचुर् द्विज सत्तमाः ।
मया तु वचनम् श्रुत्वा तेषाम् एवम् मुखात् च्युतम् ॥ ॥३-१०-७॥
Asmān abhyavapadya iti mām ūcur dvija sattamāḥ । Mayā tu vacanam śrutvā teṣām evam mukhāt cyutam ॥ ॥3-10-7॥
Translation
Those best among the twice-born (Brahmins) said to me, "Protect us." Hearing these words fall from their mouths, I (responded).

उन द्विज श्रेष्ठों (ब्राह्मणों) ने मुझसे कहा, "हमारी रक्षा करें।" उनके मुख से निकले हुए ऐसे वचनों को सुनकर (मैंने उत्तर दिया)।
English Commentary
The phrase 'Dvija sattamah' (best among the twice-born) emphasizes the high spiritual status of the sages. For such exalted beings to plead for protection ('Asman abhyavapadya' - protect us/come to our aid) indicates the severity of their distress. Rama recounts this to Sita to show that his mission is a response to a direct appeal from the spiritual authority, not an arbitrary act of violence. Hearing these words fall ('cyutam') from their mouths signifies a disruption of the natural order, where usually blessings, not pleas, fall from the lips of sages.

'द्विज सत्तमाः' (द्विजों में श्रेष्ठ) शब्द ऋषियों की उच्च आध्यात्मिक स्थिति को इंगित करता है। ऐसे तपस्वी जब किसी क्षत्रिय से याचना करते हैं, तो यह उस क्षत्रिय के लिए सम्मान का नहीं, बल्कि आत्म-चिंतन का विषय होता है। 'अभ्यवपद्य' का अर्थ है पूर्ण रूप से रक्षा या शरण देना। श्रीराम यहाँ सीता को यह बता रहे हैं कि यह पहल उनकी ओर से नहीं थी, बल्कि ऋषियों ने स्वयं उन्हें बुलाया था। ऋषियों के मुख से दीनतापूर्ण वचनों का निकलना श्रीराम के लिए एक अत्यंत मार्मिक और निर्णायक क्षण था।
