कृत्वा वचन शुश्रुषाम् वाक्यम् एतत् उदाहृतम् ।
प्रसीदन्तु भवन्तो मे ह्रीः एषा तु मम अतुला ॥ ॥३-१०-८॥
Kṛtvā vacana śuśruṣām vākyam etat udāhṛtam । Prasīdantu bhavanto me hrīḥ eṣā tu mama atulā ॥ ॥3-10-8॥
Translation
Having listened to their words, I uttered this sentence: "May you all be gracious to me; indeed, this is an incomparable shame for me."

उनकी बातों को सुनने के बाद, मैंने यह वाक्य कहा— "आप लोग मुझ पर प्रसन्न हों (मुझे क्षमा करें), यह मेरे लिए अतुलनीय लज्जा की बात है।"
English Commentary
This verse perfectly encapsulates Rama's internalized sense of Dharma and humility. Instead of feeling empowered by the sages' request, he feels 'Hri' (shame). In the Vedic worldview, if a subject has to explicitly ask the King for protection, the King has already failed in his proactive duty. Rama asks them to be gracious ('Prasidantu') implies he is asking for forgiveness for the fact that they were forced to suffer until they asked. This "incomparable shame" (atula hri) drives his resolve to fulfill his promise, viewing the request not as a favor he grants, but as a debt he owes.

यहाँ श्रीराम का चरित्र और उनका 'राजधर्म' निखर कर आता है। सामान्यतः कोई राजा या रक्षक अपनी प्रशंसा सुनकर गर्वित होता, किन्तु राम 'ह्रीः' (लज्जा) का अनुभव कर रहे हैं। यह लज्जा इसलिए है क्योंकि प्रजा या ऋषियों को रक्षा के लिए मांग करनी पड़ी; एक आदर्श राजा के राज्य में रक्षा बिना मांगे मिलनी चाहिए। 'प्रसीदन्तु' (प्रसन्न हों/क्षमा करें) कहकर वे ऋषियों के क्रोध या श्राप से नहीं, बल्कि अपनी कर्तव्य-चूक के लिए क्षमा मांग रहे हैं। यह विनम्रता ही राम को 'मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम' बनाती है।
