Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अग्रतः प्रययौ रामः सीता मध्यें सुशोभना ।
पृष्ठतः तु धनुष्पाणिः लक्ष्मणः अनुजगाम ह ॥ ॥३-११-१॥
Agrataḥ prayayau rāmaḥ sītā madhye suśobhanā । Pṛṣṭhataḥ tu dhanuṣpāṇiḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ anujagāma ha ॥ ॥3-11-1॥
Translation
“Rama walked in front, the very beautiful Sita was in the middle, and Lakshmana, bow in hand, followed behind.”

“राम सबसे आगे चले, उनके बीच में अत्यंत सुन्दरी सीता जी थीं, और पीछे-पीछे हाथ में धनुष लिए हुए लक्ष्मण चल रहे थे।”
English Commentary
This verse presents the classic visual formation of the trio in the forest, often depicted in iconography. Strategically, it is a protective formation with the vulnerable Sita flanked by the two warriors. Symbolically, it is interpreted deeply in Vedanta: Rama (Brahman/God) leads, Sita (Jiva/Soul or Maya/Energy) follows, and Lakshmana (Discipline/Guru) guards the rear. It represents the soul walking the path of life, protected by divine grace and disciplined effort.
