Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उपासीनः स काकुत्स्थः सुतीक्ष्णम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ।
अस्मिन् अरण्ये भगवन् अगस्त्यो मुनिसत्तमः ॥ ॥३-११-३०॥
upāsīnaḥ sa kākutsthaḥ sutīkṣṇam idam abravīt |
asmin araṇye bhagavan agastyo munisattamaḥ ॥3-11-30॥
Translation
Sitting near him, that scion of Kakutstha spoke this to Sutikshna: "O Venerable One, (I have heard that) Agastya, the foremost among sages, lives in this very forest."
हिंदी अनुवाद
काकुत्स्थ (राम) ने सुतीक्ष्ण मुनि के पास बैठकर उनसे यह कहा—"हे भगवन्! (मैंने सुना है कि) मुनियों में श्रेष्ठ अगस्त्य जी इसी वन में निवास करते हैं।"
English Commentary
Rama initiates the conversation about Sage Agastya, a towering figure in the epic who represents the expansion of Vedic culture into the South. By addressing Sutikshna as 'Bhagavan', Rama shows reverence. The mention of Agastya is not casual; it is strategic. Agastya is the spiritual arsenal Rama needs for the upcoming war. This inquiry marks the beginning of the end of the peaceful exile.

राम यहाँ अगस्त्य मुनि का विषय छेड़ते हैं। अगस्त्य रामायण में दक्षिण भारत के सबसे प्रभावशाली ऋषि हैं। उन्हें 'मुनिसत्तमः' (मुनियों में श्रेष्ठ) कहा गया है। राम का सुतीक्ष्ण से पूछना यह दर्शाता है कि अगस्त्य तक पहुँचना आसान नहीं था या उनका स्थान दुर्गम था। राम का यह प्रश्न कथानक को एक निर्णायक मोड़ देता है, क्योंकि अगस्त्य से भेंट के बाद ही राम को दिव्य अस्त्र और पंचवटी जाने का निर्देश मिलेगा।
