वसति इति मया नित्यम् कथाः कथयताम् श्रुतम् ।
न तु जानामि तम् देशम् वनस्य अस्य महत्तया ॥ ॥३-११-३१॥
vasati iti mayā nityam kathāḥ kathayatām śrutam |
na tu jānāmi tam deśam vanasya asya mahattayā ॥3-11-31॥
Translation
"I have constantly heard from those who narrate stories that he resides here, but due to the vastness of this forest, I do not know that specific location."

"कथा कहने वाले (अन्य ऋषियों) से मैंने नित्य यह सुना है कि वे यहीं रहते हैं, किन्तु इस वन की विशालता के कारण मैं उस स्थान को नहीं जानता।"
English Commentary
Rama admits a gap in his intelligence network. He relies on oral tradition ('kathāḥ kathayatām' - from storytellers/sages) for the general fact of Agastya's presence but lacks the specific coordinates due to the sheer scale ('mahattayā') of the Dandaka forest. This highlights the dangers and mysteries of the deep forest, where even a famous sage's retreat can remain hidden from a warrior like Rama without a local guide.
