एतत् च वन मध्यस्थम् कृष्ण अभ्र शिखर उपमम् ।
पावकस्य आश्रमस्थस्य धूमाग्रम् संप्रदृश्यते ॥ ॥३-११-५१॥
etat ca vana madhyastham kṛṣṇa abhra śikhara upamam । pā vakasya āśramasthasya dhūmāgram saṃpradṛśyate ॥ ॥3-11-51॥
Translation
And in the middle of the forest, the top of the smoke from the fire within the hermitage is seen, resembling the peak of a dark cloud.

और वन के मध्य में, काले बादलों के शिखर के समान, आश्रम में जलती हुई अग्नि का यह धुंआ ऊपर उठता हुआ दिखाई दे रहा है।
English Commentary
The visual of smoke rising from the sacrificial altar is a definitive sign of a hermitage. Rama compares the column of smoke to the "peak of a dark cloud" ("krishna abhra shikhara"), indicating its density and height. This suggests that the sacred fire (Pavaka) is being maintained with great dedication and perhaps significant offerings. In the context of the forest, this smoke is not a sign of destruction, but of creation and sustenance of Dharma through Yajna. It serves as a beacon guiding the travelers to the sage’s abode.
