भ्रातरम् संस्कृतम् कृत्वा ततः तम् मेष रूपिणम् ।
तान् द्विजान् भोजयामास श्राद्ध दृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥ ॥३-११-५७॥
bhrātaram saṃskṛtam kṛtvā tataḥ tam meṣa rūpiṇam । tān dvijān bhojayāmāsa śrāddha dṛṣṭena karmaṇā ॥ ॥3-11-57॥
Translation
Then, having cooked his brother who had taken the form of a ram, he fed him to those Brahmins according to the rites prescribed for Shraaddha.

तदनंतर वह अपने भाई (वातापि) को, जो मेष (भेड़) का रूप धारण करता था, पकाकर श्राद्ध विधि के अनुसार उन ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराता था।
English Commentary
The horror of the trap is unveiled here. Vatapi would shapeshift into a ram ("mesha rupinam"), and Ilvala would cook him ("samskritam kritva"—here meaning prepared/cooked). He would then serve this meat to the unsuspecting Brahmins as part of the ritual feast. This act was a grotesque perversion of the Shraaddha ritual, where feeding Brahmins is a meritorious act. The demons turned a life-giving ritual into a method of assassination, highlighting their perverted intellect and absolute lack of morality.

यहाँ 'संस्कृतम् कृत्वा' का अर्थ है 'पकाकर' या 'संस्कार करके'। असुरों की क्रूरता यहाँ चरम पर है—नरभक्षण (असुर द्वारा मानव/ऋषि को मारना) के लिए उन्होंने अपने ही भाई को भोजन बनाने का षड्यंत्र रचा। वातापि मायावी था, इसलिए वह भेड़ बन जाता था और इल्वल उसे पकाकर ऋषियों को खिला देता था। ऋषियों को यह भान भी नहीं होता था कि वे मृत्यु को ग्रहण कर रहे हैं। यह आतिथ्य धर्म का सबसे घृणित उल्लंघन था।
