Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अगस्त्येन तदा देवैः प्रार्थितेन महर्षिणा ।
अनुभूय किल श्राद्धे भक्षितः स महा असुरः ॥ ॥३-११-६१॥
agastyena tadā devaiḥ prārthitena maharṣiṇā । anubhūya kila śrāddhe bhakṣitaḥ sa mahā asuraḥ ॥ ॥3-11-61॥
Translation
Then, the great sage Agastya, requested by the gods, having understood (the situation), ate (and digested) that great demon during the Shraaddha.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब देवताओं की प्रार्थना पर महर्षि अगस्त्य ने (निमंत्रण स्वीकार किया और) श्राद्ध में उस महा-असुर (वातापि) को पहचानकर खा लिया (पचा लिया)।
English Commentary
The turning point arrives with Sage Agastya. Requested by the Devas, Agastya steps in to stop the carnage. "Anubhuya" suggests he fully perceived the trickery but played along. Agastya consumed the meal knowing it was the demon Vatapi. The verse implies the immense spiritual power of Agastya, whose internal fire (digestive fire) was potent enough to neutralize and digest a powerful demon who had killed thousands. It represents the victory of spiritual knowledge and control over brute, deceptive force.

यहाँ कहानी का निर्णायक मोड़ है। देवताओं ने अगस्त्य मुनि से सहायता मांगी क्योंकि वे ही इस माया को काट सकते थे। 'अनुभूय' का अर्थ है कि अगस्त्य मुनि ने अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि से स्थिति को समझ लिया था, फिर भी उन्होंने निमंत्रण स्वीकार किया। उन्होंने वातापि को केवल खाया नहीं, बल्कि उसे अपने तपोबल से पचा लिया। यह 'विषस्य विषमौषधम्' (जहर की काट जहर) का उदाहरण है—एक असुर जो पेट फाड़कर निकलता था, उसे एक ऐसे ऋषि ने खाया जिसकी पाचन शक्ति (जठराग्नि) ब्रह्मांडीय स्तर की थी।
