Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स तदा भाषमाणम् तु भ्रातरम् विप्र घातिनम् ।
अब्रवीत् प्रहसन् धीमान् अगस्त्यो मुनि सत्तमः ॥ ॥३-११-६३॥
sa tadā bhāṣamāṇam tu bhrātaram vipra ghātinam । abravīt prahasan dhīmān agastyo muni sattamaḥ ॥ ॥3-11-63॥
Translation
Then, the wise Agastya, the best among sages, smilingly spoke to that brother (Ilvala), the slayer of Brahmins, as he was speaking.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब मुनियों में श्रेष्ठ, बुद्धिमान अगस्त्य ने उस ब्राह्मण-घाती भाई (इल्वल) को बोलते हुए (देखकर), हँसते हुए यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse captures the supreme confidence of Sage Agastya. Confronted with the terrifying call of the demon Ilvala, Agastya does not tremble; instead, he speaks 'prahasan' (smilingly). This smile signifies his spiritual superiority and the futility of the demon's trap against a realized soul. Described as 'Dhiman' (wise) and 'Muni sattamah' (best among sages), Agastya’s reaction is not of arrogance, but of absolute certainty in the power of his penance. It sets the stage for the crushing revelation in the next verse.

इस श्लोक में महर्षि अगस्त्य की निर्भीकता और आत्मविश्वास दर्शनीय है। इल्वल के भयानक आह्वान को सुनकर डरने के बजाय, अगस्त्य मुनि 'प्रहसन्' (हँसते हुए) प्रतिक्रिया देते हैं। यह हंसी इल्वल की मूर्खता पर व्यंग्य भी है और ऋषि की अपनी शक्ति पर विश्वास का प्रतीक भी। अगस्त्य को 'धीमान्' (बुद्धिमान) और 'मुनि सत्तमः' (मुनियों में श्रेष्ठ) कहा गया है, क्योंकि उन्होंने असुर की चाल को न केवल समझा बल्कि उसे उसी के खेल में मात दे दी। यह धर्म की अधर्म पर विजय के पूर्व का शांत क्षण है।
