Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उपास्य पश्चिमाम् संध्याम् सह भ्रात्रा यथा विधि ।
प्रविवेश आश्रम पदम् तम् ऋषिम् च अभ्यवादयत् ॥ ॥३-११-६९॥
upāsya paścimām saṃdhyām saha bhrātrā yathā vidhi । praviveśa āśrama padam tam ṛṣim ca abhyavādayat ॥ ॥3-11-69॥
Translation
Having worshipped the western twilight (evening prayers) along with his brother according to the rites, he entered the hermitage and saluted that sage.

अपने भाई के साथ विधिपूर्वक पश्चिम संध्या (सायं-संध्या) की उपासना करके, उन्होंने आश्रम में प्रवेश किया और उस ऋषि (अगस्त्य के भाई) को प्रणाम किया।
English Commentary
Rama's adherence to Dharma is highlighted here. Before seeking rest or food, he prioritizes his spiritual duty. 'Upasya paschimam sandhyam' refers to the evening meditation facing the setting sun (west). Doing this 'yatha vidhi' (according to rule) with Lakshmana shows their discipline. Only after these rites do they enter the ashram and pay respects to the resident sage. This sequence—duty first, then rest—exemplifies the disciplined life of the Aryan princes even in the wilderness.

श्रीराम का चरित्र यहाँ 'मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम' के रूप में उभरता है। आश्रम में प्रवेश करने से पूर्व उन्होंने 'यथा विधि' (विधि के अनुसार) सायं संध्या वंदना पूर्ण की। वे थके होने के बावजूद अपने नित्य कर्म नहीं छोड़ते। 'प्रविवेश' (प्रवेश किया) और 'अभ्यवादयत्' (अभिवादन किया) दर्शाता है कि अतिथि के रूप में उन्होंने शिष्टाचार का पालन किया। यह श्लोक वैदिक जीवन पद्धति में 'संध्या वंदना' की अनिवार्यता को दर्शाता है, जिसे क्षत्रिय वनवास में भी नहीं त्यागते।
