Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आगताः स्म आश्रम पदम् सौमित्रे प्रविश अग्रतः ।
निवेदय इह माम् प्राप्तम् ऋषये सह सीतया ॥ ॥३-११-९४॥
Āgatāḥ sma āśrama padam saumitre praviśa agrataḥ । Nivedaya iha mām prāptam ṛṣaye saha sītayā ॥ ॥3-11-94॥
Translation
"O Saumitri (Lakshmana)! We have arrived at the hermitage grounds. You enter first and announce to the Sage that I have arrived here with Sita."

"हे सौमित्र (लक्ष्मण)! हम आश्रम के द्वार पर आ गए हैं। तुम आगे प्रवेश करो और ऋषि को सूचित करो कि मैं सीता सहित यहाँ पहुँचा हूँ।"
English Commentary
Rama demonstrates proper protocol (Maryada) for visiting a sage. Instead of barging in, he pauses at the entrance and sends Lakshmana ahead as an emissary to announce their arrival. Addressing Lakshmana as 'Saumitri' emphasizes his closeness and reliability. Explicitly mentioning "with Sita" ensures the sage knows the composition of the party, as receiving a householder couple involves different rites of hospitality than receiving a solitary ascetic. This marks the transition from the journey to the formal encounter.

श्रीराम यहाँ मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम के रूप में शिष्टाचार का पालन कर रहे हैं। यद्यपि वे स्वयं समर्थ हैं, फिर भी वे सीधे ऋषि के पास नहीं जाते। वे लक्ष्मण को 'अग्रतः' (आगे) भेजते हैं, जो दूत या प्रतिहारी का कार्य कर रहे हैं। 'सह सीतया' (सीता के साथ) का उल्लेख महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि वानप्रस्थ आश्रम में पत्नी का साथ होना धर्मानुष्ठान के लिए आवश्यक माना जाता है, और अतिथि सत्कार के नियम भी गृहस्थ (सपत्नीक) अतिथियों के लिए विशिष्ट होते हैं। यह राम की विनम्रता है कि वे अनुमति और सूचना के बिना एकांतवासी ऋषि की शांति भंग नहीं करना चाहते।
