Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स प्रविश्य आश्रम पदम् लक्ष्मणो राघव अनुजः ।
अगस्त्य शिष्यम् आसाद्य वाक्यम् एतद् उवाच ह ॥ ॥३-१२-१॥
Sa praviśya āśrama padam lakṣmaṇo rāghava anujaḥ । Agastya śiṣyam āsādya vākyam etad uvāca ha ॥ ॥3-12-1॥
Translation
Entering the hermitage grounds, Lakshmana, the younger brother of Raghava, approached a disciple of Agastya and spoke these words.

रघुनन्दन श्रीराम के अनुज लक्ष्मण ने आश्रम में प्रवेश करके अगस्त्य मुनि के एक शिष्य के पास जाकर यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse opens Sarga 12. Lakshmana immediately executes Rama's order. His identity is framed strictly as Raghava anujah (Rama's younger brother), reinforcing his role as Rama's extension. He approaches a disciple (Shishya) first, respecting the ashram's chain of command. A direct approach to a meditating sage could be disruptive, so communicating through a disciple is the appropriate etiquette. The narrative flows smoothly from command to execution.

यह १२वें सर्ग का पहला श्लोक है। लक्ष्मण का परिचय 'राघव अनुजः' (राघव के छोटे भाई) के रूप में दिया गया है, जो उनकी पहचान का मूल आधार है। वे सीधे अगस्त्य के पास नहीं जाते, बल्कि पदानुक्रम (hierarchy) का सम्मान करते हुए पहले 'अगस्त्य शिष्य' से संपर्क करते हैं। यह गुरुकुल की व्यवस्था को दर्शाता है जहाँ गुरु तक पहुँचने के लिए शिष्यों के माध्यम से जाना होता है। 'उवाच ह' (कहा) एक पौराणिक शैली है जो कथा की ऐतिहासिकता (it happened thus) को पुष्ट करती है।
