Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रथमम् च उपविश्य अथ धर्मज्ञो मुनिपुंगवः ।
उवाच रामम् आसीनम् प्रांजलिम् धर्मकोविदम् ॥ ॥३-१२-२८॥
Prathamam ca upaviśya atha dharmajño munipungavaḥ |
Uvāca rāmam āsīnam prāñjalim dharmakovidam ॥3-12-28॥
Translation
Then, having sat down first, the Knower of Dharma and foremost of Munis spoke to Rama, who was seated with folded hands and who was (also) an expert in Dharma.

तदनंतर धर्म के ज्ञाता मुनि श्रेष्ठ (अगस्त्य) पहले स्वयं बैठे और फिर हाथ जोड़कर बैठे हुए धर्मवेत्ता राम से बोले।
English Commentary
The protocol of the assembly is established. Agastya, the 'Munipungava' (bull among sages, i.e., the best), sits down first, asserting his spiritual seniority. Rama, described as 'Dharmakovidam' (expert in Dharma), understands this hierarchy perfectly and sits with 'Pranjalim' (folded hands), adopting the posture of a student or subordinate. Both are masters of Dharma, yet they play their respective roles of Sage and Prince flawlessly. This sets a solemn and respectful tone for the discourse that is about to follow.

भोजन आदि के पश्चात वार्तालाप का समय है। प्रोटोकॉल के अनुसार, गुरु या श्रेष्ठ व्यक्ति 'प्रथमम् उपविश्य' (पहले बैठते हैं)। अगस्त्य मुनि, जो 'मुनिपुंगव' (मुनियों में श्रेष्ठ) हैं, अपना स्थान ग्रहण करते हैं। राम, जो 'धर्मकोविदम्' (धर्म के मर्मज्ञ) हैं, शिष्टाचार वश हाथ जोड़कर (प्रांजलिम्) बैठे हैं। दोनों 'धर्मज्ञ' हैं—एक वक्ता है और एक श्रोता। यह स्थिति ज्ञान के आदान-प्रदान के लिए उपयुक्त है। यह दृश्य उपनिषदों की कथाओं जैसा है जहाँ शिष्य गुरु के निकट बैठता है। अब महत्वपूर्ण संवाद का आरंभ होगा।
