Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
हृदयस्थः च ते छन्दो विज्ञातः तपसा मया ।
इह वासम् प्रतिज्ञाय मया सह तपो वने ॥ ॥३-१३-१६॥
Hṛdayasthaḥ ca te chando vijñātaḥ tapasā mayā । Iha vāsam pratijñāya mayā saha tapo vane ॥ ॥3-13-16॥
Translation
Though you had intended (or pledged) to dwell here in this forest of ascetics with me, I have understood the true desire (and purpose) residing in your heart through my ascetic power.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यद्यपि तुमने मेरे साथ इस तपोवन में रहने की इच्छा (या प्रतिज्ञा) की थी, तथापि मैंने अपने तप से तुम्हारे हृदय की बात (वास्तविक प्रयोजन) जान ली है।
English Commentary
This verse reveals the depth of the Sage-Disciple interaction. 'Hridayasthah chandah' refers to the inner bent or intent of Rama's heart. While Rama might have outwardly expressed a wish to stay in the safety of Agastya's ashram ('maya saha' - with me), Agastya discerns a different underlying purpose via his Tapas. He recognizes that Rama is a Kshatriya with a mission (Deva Karya). Staying in the peaceful, protected zone of Agastya would contradict Rama's destiny to confront Ravana. Agastya is essentially saying, "I know you want to respect me by staying here, but I also know the warrior within you needs a field of action, not just retreat."

यह श्लोक थोड़ा गूढ़ है। राम ने शिष्टाचार वश अगस्त्य के साथ रहने की इच्छा प्रकट की होगी, या उनका मन वास्तव में शांत तपोवन में रमने का था। किन्तु अगस्त्य कहते हैं, "मैंने तुम्हारे हृदय का छंद (इच्छा/प्रयोजन) जान लिया है।" यहाँ 'हृदयस्थः छन्दो' का अर्थ राम का अवतारी उद्देश्य (राक्षस वध) हो सकता है। यदि राम अगस्त्य के पास रहते, तो वे सुरक्षित रहते, लेकिन उनका क्षत्रिय धर्म (दुष्टों का नाश) पूरा न होता। अगस्त्य जानते हैं कि राम का अवचेतन मन या उनका प्रारब्ध उन्हें संघर्ष की ओर ले जाना चाहता है। इसलिए, वे राम की बाहरी विनम्रता के परे उनकी आंतरिक नियति को पढ़ रहे हैं और उन्हें पंचवटी भेज रहे हैं।
