भवान् अपि सदाचारः च शक्तः च परिरक्षणे ।
अपि च अत्र वसन् राम तापसान् पालयिष्यसि ॥ ॥३-१३-२०॥
Bhavān api sadācāraḥ ca śaktaḥ ca parirakṣaṇe । Api ca atra vasan rāma tāpasān pālayiṣyasi ॥ ॥3-13-20॥
Translation
You are righteous in conduct and capable of protection. Moreover, O Rama, while residing there, you will be able to protect the ascetics.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आप सदाचारी हैं और (धर्म की) रक्षा करने में समर्थ भी हैं। हे राम! वहाँ रहते हुए आप (राक्षसों से) उन ऋषियों-मुनियों की रक्षा भी कर सकेंगे।
English Commentary
Here, the Sage reveals the strategic imperative behind the choice of Panchavati. It is not just a vacation spot; it is a frontier that needs guarding. Agastya validates Rama’s competence ('shaktah' - capable) and integrity ('sadachara' - righteous). He explicitly states the secondary goal of their residence: 'tapasan palayishyasi' (you will protect the ascetics). This confirms that Rama is being deployed as a guardian of the Dharma in a hostile region. Agastya effectively deputizes Rama to clean up the demon-infested Janasthana, aligning Rama’s personal exile with the universal need for protection against evil.

यह श्लोक अगस्त्य के असली उद्देश्य को उजागर करता है। अब तक वे सीता के सुख की बात कर रहे थे, लेकिन अब वे राम को उनका दायित्व सौंपते हैं। 'शक्तः च परिरक्षणे'—आप रक्षा करने में समर्थ हैं। और किसकी रक्षा? 'तापसान् पालयिष्यसि'—वहाँ रहने वाले अन्य तपस्वियों की। पंचवटी जनस्थान के पास है जहाँ खर-दूषण का आतंक है। अगस्त्य राम को वहाँ एक 'आउटपोस्ट' (छावनी) बनाने के लिए भेज रहे हैं ताकि वे ऋषियों के रक्षक बन सकें। यह वनवास को एक मिशन में बदल देता है। ऋषि अगस्त्य ने कूटनीति से राम को उनकी पत्नी के सुख और उनके क्षत्रिय धर्म, दोनों का प्रलोभन देकर पंचवटी भेजा है।
