Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तेषाम् इयम् वसुमती पुरा आसीत् स वन अर्णवा ।
दनुः तु अजनयत् पुत्रम् अश्वग्रीवम् अरिंदम ॥ ॥३-१४-१६॥
Teṣām iyam vasumatī purā āsīt sa vana arṇavā |
Danuḥ tu ajanayat putram aśvagrīvam ariṃdama ॥3-14-16॥
Translation
This earth, along with its forests and oceans, formerly belonged to them (the Daityas). O tamer of enemies! Danu gave birth to a son named Ashvagriva.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वानों और सागरों सहित यह पृथ्वी पहले उन्हीं (दैत्यों) के अधीन थी। हे अरिंदम! दनु ने अश्वग्रीव नामक पुत्र को जन्म दिया।
English Commentary
Jatayu reveals a primordial geopolitical reality: the Earth (Vasumati) originally belonged to the Daityas. This aligns with Puranic narratives where Asuras/Daityas often rule the earth until ousted by Devas or Avatars. It contextualizes the eternal struggle for dominion over the 'forests and oceans.' Jatayu then introduces the lineage of Danu (the Danavas), mentioning her son Ashvagriva. This specific mention of Ashvagriva serves to identify the Danava lineage distinct from the Daityas. Jatayu is systematically categorizing the beings of the world, moving from the highest Devas down to the powerful Asuras and Danavas.
