Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मयूर नादिता रम्याः प्रांशवो बहु कंदराः ।
दृश्यन्ते गिरयः सौम्य फुल्लैः तरुभिर् आवृताः ॥३-१५-१४॥
mayūra nāditā ramyāḥ prāṃśavo bahu kandarāḥ |
dṛśyante girayaḥ saumya phullaiḥ tarubhira āvṛtāḥ ॥3-15-14॥
Translation
O Gentle One! Resounding with the cries of peacocks, these beautiful, lofty mountains with many caves and covered with blossoming trees are visible.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौम्य! मोरों की आवाज़ से गूँजते हुए, बहुत सी कंदराओं (गुफाओं) वाले, ऊँचे और खिले हुए वृक्षों से ढके हुए ये रमणीय पर्वत दिखाई दे रहे हैं।
English Commentary
The topography of Panchavati includes not just the river but also defensive geography. Rama points out the "pranshavo" (lofty) mountains. The mention of "bahu kandarah" (many caves) is strategically significant; caves serve as emergency shelters during torrential rains or enemy attacks—a crucial consideration for exiles living in a demon-infested forest. The call of peacocks adds auditory beauty to the visual grandeur. Rama is essentially highlighting the natural fortifications that surround their potential home.

पंचवटी की भौगोलिक स्थिति में केवल नदी ही नहीं, बल्कि पर्वत भी हैं। 'बहु कंदराः' (बहुत सी गुफाएँ) एक महत्वपूर्ण सामरिक बिंदु है। वनवास में संकट के समय या भारी वर्षा में गुफाएँ ही सुरक्षित आश्रय बनती हैं। मोरों की केका (आवाज़) वातावरण को संगीतमय बनाती है, जो सीता के मन बहलाव के लिए आवश्यक है। राम लक्ष्मण का ध्यान इन प्राकृतिक सुरक्षा प्रहरियों (पर्वतों) की ओर आकर्षित कर रहे हैं, जो आश्रम को आंधी और तूफान से भी बचाएंगे।
