Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
भावज्ञेन कृतज्ञेन धर्मज्ञेन च लक्ष्मण ।
त्वया पुत्रेण धर्मात्मा न संवृत्तः पिता मम ॥ ॥३-१५-२९॥
Bhāvajñena kṛtajñena dharmajñena ca lakṣmaṇa । Tvayā putreṇa dharmātmā na saṃvṛttaḥ pitā mama ॥ ॥3-15-29॥
Translation
"O Lakshmana! You are the knower of feelings, grateful, and the knower of Dharma. With you as a son, my righteous father has not died (but lives on in you)."

"हे लक्ष्मण! तुम मेरे मनोभावों को जानने वाले (भावज्ञ), किए हुए उपकार को मानने वाले (कृतज्ञ) और धर्म के ज्ञाता (धर्मज्ञ) हो। तुम जैसे पुत्र को पाकर मेरे धर्मात्मा पिता की मृत्यु नहीं हुई है (वे तुम्हारे रूप में जीवित हैं)।"
English Commentary
This is one of the most poignant verses in the Ramayana. Rama bestows three profound titles on Lakshmana: 'Bhāvajña' (one who intuitively understands thoughts/feelings), 'Kṛtajña' (one who acknowledges kindness/grateful), and 'Dharmajña' (knower of righteousness). The climax of the praise is Rama stating that his father, King Dasharatha, has not truly died because he lives on through Lakshmana. Rama sees the father's virtues and protective nature reflected in his younger brother. By serving Rama with the dedication of a son and the protection of a father, Lakshmana fills the void of Dasharatha’s absence. This is the highest eulogy Lakshmana receives from Rama.

यह वाल्मीकि रामायण के सबसे भावुक और गहरे श्लोकों में से एक है। राम लक्ष्मण को तीन विशेषण देते हैं: 'भावज्ञ' (बिना कहे मन की बात समझने वाला), 'कृतज्ञ' (प्रेम का मान रखने वाला), और 'धर्मज्ञ' (कर्तव्य को जानने वाला)। राम कहते हैं कि लक्ष्मण केवल भाई नहीं, बल्कि पुत्र समान हैं। वे कहते हैं कि यद्यपि महाराज दशरथ का स्वर्गवास हो चुका है, लेकिन लक्ष्मण के गुणों, सेवा और प्रेम को देखकर उन्हें लगता है कि पिता अभी भी जीवित हैं। लक्ष्मण ने राम की वैसी ही देखभाल की जैसी एक पिता अपने पुत्र की, या पुत्र पिता की (आज्ञा पालन में) करता है। यह लक्ष्मण के चरित्र का सर्वोच्च प्रमाण पत्र है जो स्वयं राम ने दिया है।
