रमते यत्र वैदेही त्वम् अहम् चैव लक्ष्मण ।
तादृशो दृश्यताम् देशः संनिकृष्ट जलाशयः ॥३-१५-४॥
ramate yatra vaidehī tvam aham caiva lakṣmaṇa |
tādṛśo dṛśyatām deśaḥ saṃnikṛṣṭa jalāśayaḥ ॥3-15-4॥
Translation
O Lakshmana! Look for such a spot where Vaidehi (Sita) finds delight, where you and I can reside happily, and where a water source is close by.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! ऐसा स्थान ढूँढो जहाँ वैदेही (सीता) का मन रमे, जहाँ तुम और मैं भी सुखपूर्वक रह सकें और जहाँ जलाशय (जल स्रोत) निकट ही हो।
English Commentary
Rama sets the criteria for the hermitage site. His prioritization is telling: the first condition is Sita's happiness ('ramate yatra vaidehi'). This shows his deep solicitude for his wife, who has left royal luxury to follow him; her comfort is paramount. The second is their collective well-being, and the third is the practical necessity of a nearby water source ('sannikrishta jalashayah'). Water is essential not just for survival but for the daily Vedic rituals that define their life as Aryas. It reveals Rama's pragmatic planning alongside his emotional intelligence.

आश्रम के चयन के लिए राम मापदंड (criteria) निर्धारित कर रहे हैं। सबसे पहली प्राथमिकता सीता की प्रसन्नता है—'रमते यत्र वैदेही'। राम को अपने वनवास के कष्ट की चिंता नहीं है, परंतु वे चाहते हैं कि जनकनंदिनी सीता को वन में भी कोई कष्ट न हो। दूसरा मापदंड तीनों का सामंजस्य है, और तीसरा व्यावहारिक आवश्यकता—'संनिकृष्ट जलाशयः' (निकटस्थ जल)। जल ही जीवन और दैनिक यज्ञ-अनुष्ठान का आधार है। यह श्लोक एक गृहस्थ के रूप में राम के उत्तरदायित्व और अपनी पत्नी के प्रति उनके प्रेम और संवेदनशीलता का परिचायक है।
