Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मयूखैः उपसर्पद्भिः हिम नीहार संवृतैः ।
दूरम् अभ्युदितः सूर्यः शशांक इव लक्ष्यते ॥ ॥३-१६-१८॥
Mayūkhaiḥ upasarpadbhiḥ hima nīhāra saṃvṛtaḥ । Dūram abhyuditaḥ sūryaḥ śaśāṃka iva lakṣyate ॥ ॥3-16-18॥
Translation
Although the sun has risen high in the sky, it looks like the Moon, because its spreading rays are shrouded by frost and mist.

आकाश में बहुत ऊपर चढ़ आने पर भी, बर्फ और कोहरे से ढकी हुई अपनी किरणों के कारण, सूर्य चंद्रमा (शशांक) जैसा दिखाई दे रहा है।
English Commentary
This verse focuses on the optical illusion created by the winter atmosphere. Even when the sun is dūram abhyuditaḥ (risen high/advanced in the day), it lacks its usual ferocity. It is compared to the moon (śaśāṃka iva)—pale and look-able without squinting. This transformation is attributed to the rays being hima nīhāra saṃvṛtaḥ (enveloped in frost/fog). It reinforces the theme of altered perception where the boundaries between the fiery sun and the cool moon are blurred by the season.

यहाँ पुनः सूर्य और चंद्रमा के विरोधाभास का प्रयोग किया गया है। आमतौर पर सूर्य प्रखर होता है, लेकिन हेमंत ऋतु में 'दूरम् अभ्युदितः' (काफी ऊपर आ जाने पर भी) वह 'शशांक इव' (चंद्रमा जैसा) शीतल और मंद लग रहा है। इसका कारण 'हिम नीहार संवृतैः' है—कोहरे ने सूर्य की रश्मियों (मयूखैः) के ताप को सोख लिया है। यह रूपक सर्दी के प्रभाव को स्थापित करता है कि उसने सूर्य के स्वभाव को भी बदल दिया है।
