Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रह्वः कलश हसतः तम् सीतया सह वीर्यवान् ।
पृष्ठतो अनुव्रजन् भ्राता सौमित्रिर् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥३-१६-३॥
Prahvaḥ kalaśa hasataḥ tam sītayā saha vīryavān । Pṛṣṭhato anuvrajan bhrātā saumitrir idam abravīt ॥ ॥3-16-3॥
Translation
Humble, with a water-pitcher in his hand, the valiant brother Saumitri (Lakshmana), following behind him along with Sita, spoke these words.

हाथ में कलश लिए, विनम्रता से झुके हुए, पराक्रमी भाई सुमित्रानंदन (लक्ष्मण), सीता और राम के पीछे चलते हुए यह वचन बोले।
English Commentary
This creates a striking visual of Lakshmana's character. Although he is 'Vīryavān' (valiant/heroic), he is described as 'Prahvaḥ' (humble/bowed with modesty) and is carrying a 'Kalasha' (water pot) for his brother's bath. Walking behind Rama and Sita signifies his role as their guardian and servant. Lakshmana initiates a conversation about the beauty of the season to please Rama, showing that his mind is constantly focused on enhancing Rama's experience of the forest.
