अत्यन्त सुख संवृद्धः सुकुमारो हिमार्दितः ।
कथम् तु अपर रात्रेषु सरयूम् अवगाहते ॥ ॥३-१६-३०॥
atyanta sukha saṃvṛddhaḥ sukumāro himārditaḥ |
katham tu apara rātreṣu sarayūm avagāhate ॥3-16-30॥
Translation
He who has been brought up in extreme comfort and is very delicate; how does he, tormented by the cold, enter the Sarayu waters in the early hours of the dawn?

वे अत्यंत सुख में पले-बढ़े हैं और शरीर से बहुत कोमल (सुकुमार) हैं। वे ठंड से पीड़ित होकर, रात के अंतिम पहर (भोर) में सरयू के जल में कैसे प्रवेश करते होंगे?
English Commentary
Lakshmana expresses deep empathy and distress for his brother. He contrasts Bharata's upbringing—atyanta sukha samvriddhah (raised in extreme luxury) and sukumaro (delicate/tender)—with the harsh reality of his current penance. The rhetorical question 'How does he enter...?' reflects Lakshmana's pain at imagining Bharata's suffering. It highlights the theme that emotional bonds and shared suffering are more painful to the observer than their own physical hardships.

इस श्लोक में लक्ष्मण की वेदना और करुणा छलक रही है। वे भरत को 'सुकुमार' (delicate) कहते हैं, क्योंकि वे राजमहलों में पले हैं। लक्ष्मण को अपनी चिंता नहीं है, पर भरत के कष्ट की चिंता है। 'कथम्' (कैसे) शब्द में आश्चर्य और पीड़ा दोनों हैं। वनवासी होने के नाते लक्ष्मण और राम तो अभ्यस्त हो रहे हैं, किन्तु भरत, जो इसके आदी नहीं थे, उनका इस 'अपर रात्रेषु' (ब्रह्ममुहूर्त/भोर) में ठंडे पानी में उतरना लक्ष्मण के हृदय को विदीर्ण कर रहा है।
