पद्मपत्रेक्षणः श्यामः श्रीमान् निरुदरो महान् ।
धर्मज्ञः सत्यवादी च ह्री निषेधो जितेन्द्रियः ॥ ॥३-१६-३१॥
padmapatrekṣaṇaḥ śyāmaḥ śrīmān nirudaro mahān |
dharmajñaḥ satyavādī ca hrī niṣedho jitendriyaḥ ॥3-16-31॥
Translation
He has eyes like lotus petals, a dark complexion, is glorious, possesses a flat and noble belly, is great in stature, a knower of Dharma, truthful, restrained by conscience (shame at doing wrong), and has conquered his senses.

जिनके नेत्र कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान हैं, जो श्याम वर्ण के हैं, शोभायमान हैं, जिनका उदर (पेट) समतल और सुडौल है, जो महान हैं, धर्म के ज्ञाता हैं, सत्यवादी हैं, लज्जा (मर्यादा) से अनुशासित हैं और जिन्होंने अपनी इंद्रियों को जीत लिया है (ऐसे भरत हैं)।
English Commentary
Lakshmana describes Bharata using physical markers that signify royalty and divinity according to Samudrika Shastra (the science of body features). Attributes like padmapatrekshanah (lotus-eyed) and shyama (dark-complexioned) highlight his resemblance to Rama. The term hri nishedho is psychologically profound; it implies an internal moral compass where the sense of shame or propriety prevents one from deviating from the path of righteousness. This description establishes Bharata not just as a brother, but as a restrained sage-king (Rajarshi).

लक्ष्मण यहाँ भरत के शारीरिक और चारित्रिक गुणों का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। 'निरुदरः' (समतल पेट) सामुद्रिक शास्त्र के अनुसार महापुरुषों का लक्षण माना जाता है। भरत का शारीरिक वर्णन—श्याम वर्ण और कमल नयन—राम के समान ही है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि वे केवल आचरण में ही नहीं, अपितु स्वरूप में भी राम के प्रतिबिम्ब हैं। 'ह्री निषेधो' का अर्थ है वह व्यक्ति जो पाप या अधर्म करने से लज्जावश रुक जाता है; यह एक सात्विक गुण है जो संयम को जन्म देता है।
