Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्राज्यकामा जनपदाः संपन्नतर गो रसाः ।
विचरन्ति महीपाला यात्र अर्थम् विजिगीषवः ॥ ॥३-१६-७॥
Prājyakāmā janapadāḥ saṃpannatara go rasāḥ । Vicaranti mahīpālā yātra artham vijigīṣavaḥ ॥ ॥3-16-7॥
Translation
"The villages are filled with abundant supplies; milk and dairy products are plentiful. Kings, desiring conquest, are marching out for their expeditions."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"गांवों (जनपदों) में प्रचुर मात्रा में अन्न और इच्छाओं की पूर्ति की सामग्री है। दूध और घी (गो रस) की अधिकता है। विजय की इच्छा रखने वाले राजा (विजिगीषवः) अपनी यात्रा (आक्रमण/अभियान) के लिए निकल पड़े हैं।"
English Commentary
This verse reflects the strategic and economic reality of the season. Economically, the villages are prosperous with 'Go rasāḥ' (cow products like milk and ghee) being abundant due to good grazing. Strategically, winter was the season for war campaigns in ancient India. The roads were dry and the weather bearable for marching armies. Lakshmana, being a prince, naturally associates the season with the movements of 'Vijigīṣavaḥ' (kings desiring victory/conquest), linking nature to royal duty (Rajadharma).

प्राचीन भारत में हेमंत ऋतु युद्ध अभियानों ('यात्रा') के लिए उपयुक्त मानी जाती थी क्योंकि रास्ते सूखे होते थे और गर्मी नहीं होती थी। 'विजिगीषवः' उन राजाओं को कहते हैं जो विजय के इच्छुक हैं। दूसरी ओर, गांवों में समृद्धि है—'संपन्नतर गो रसाः' (गायों के दूध-घी की प्रचुरता)। यह श्लोक एक राजा (लक्ष्मण) की दृष्टि को दर्शाता है जो मौसम को प्रजा की समृद्धि और राज्य की politika (सैन्य अभियान) के नजरिए से देख रहा है।
