शरीरज समाविष्टा राक्षसी रामम् अब्रवीत् ।
जटी तापस रूपेण सभार्यः शर चाप धृक् ॥ ॥३-१७-१२॥
Śarīraja samāviṣṭā rākṣasī rāmam abravīt |
Jaṭī tāpasa rūpeṇa sabhāryaḥ śara cāpa dhṛk ॥3-17-12॥
Translation
Possessed by the mind-born passion (Lust/Kama), the demoness spoke to Rama: "(You are) An ascetic with matted hair, yet accompanied by a wife and wielding a bow and arrows."

कामदेव (शरीरज) के वश में हुई उस राक्षसी ने राम से कहा—"आप जटाधारी तपस्वी के वेश में हैं, फिर भी पत्नी साथ है और धनुष-बाण भी धारण किए हुए हैं।"
English Commentary
Here, Shurpanakha breaks her silence. The term śarīraja (born of the body) refers to Kama/Lust, indicating she is acting under an irresistible biological impulse rather than reason. Her observation is astute despite her infatuation: she notices the paradox in Rama’s appearance. He wears the jaṭā (matted hair of a renunciate) yet carries weapons (śara cāpa dhṛk) and is with a wife (sabhāryaḥ). This visual contradiction—an armed, married ascetic—confuses her and serves as the opening for her inquiry into his identity.

इस श्लोक में शूर्पणखा का आश्चर्य और उसकी काम-पीड़ा दोनों व्यक्त होते हैं। 'शरीरज' का अर्थ है शरीर से उत्पन्न होने वाला (कामदेव)। वह इतनी मोहित है कि मर्यादा भूलकर सीधे प्रश्न करती है। उसका प्रश्न तार्किक है—तपस्वी वेष (जटाधारी) का गृहस्थ (सभार्य) और योद्धा (शर चाप धृक्) के चिह्नों के साथ क्या मेल? यह राम के 'वनवासी क्षत्रिय' स्वरूप पर एक बाहरी व्यक्ति (राक्षसी) की दृष्टि है, जिसे यह संयोजन विचित्र लगता है। यह प्रश्न कथा को आगे बढ़ाता है और राम को अपना परिचय देने का अवसर देता है।
