आगतः त्वम् इमम् देशम् कथम् राक्षस सेवितम् ।
किम् आगमन कृत्यम् ते तत् त्वम् आख्यातुम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥३-१७-१३॥
Āgataḥ tvam imam deśam katham rākṣasa sevitam |
Kim āgamana kṛtyam te tat tvam ākhyātum arhasi ॥3-17-13॥
Translation
"How have you come to this region frequented by demons? What is the purpose of your arrival? You ought to explain this to me."

"आप राक्षसों द्वारा सेवित इस देश में कैसे आए हैं? आपके यहाँ आने का क्या प्रयोजन (उद्देश्य) है? यह सब मुझे बताने की कृपा करें।"
English Commentary
Shurpanakha asserts the territorial dominance of her race by calling the forest rākṣasa sevitam (attended/inhabited by Rakshasas). Her query implies that Rama is an anomaly or an intruder in this hostile environment. The question seeks to uncover two things: the method of his arrival (katham) and the motive (kim kṛtyam). While she is driven by lust, her demon instincts remain active—she needs to assess whether this armed ascetic poses a threat or if he is merely a wanderer.

शूर्पणखा का यह प्रश्न दंडकारण्य में राक्षसों के प्रभुत्व को दर्शाता है। वह इसे 'राक्षस सेवितम्' (राक्षसों द्वारा सेवित/शासित) देश कहती है, जिससे यह संकेत मिलता है कि यहाँ मनुष्यों का आना खतरे से खाली नहीं है। 'आख्यातुम् अर्हसि' (आप बताने के योग्य हैं) यद्यपि एक शिष्ट प्रयोग लग सकता है, लेकिन एक राक्षसी के मुख से यह एक अधिकारपूर्ण पूछताछ जैसा भी है। वह जानना चाहती है कि क्या राम यहाँ बसने आए हैं या केवल भ्रमण के लिए, ताकि वह उसी अनुसार अपनी योजना बना सके।
