नियोगात् तु नरेन्द्रस्य पितुर् मातुः च यंत्रितः ।
धर्मार्थम् धर्मकांक्षी च वनम् वस्तुम् इह आगतः ॥ ॥३-१७-१७॥
Niyogāt tu narendrasya pitur mātuḥ ca yantritaḥ |
Dharmārtham dharmakāṅkṣī ca vanam vastum iha āgataḥ ॥3-17-17॥
Translation
"Bound by the command of the king, my father, and my mother, and desirous of righteousness (Dharma), I have come here to dwell in the forest for the sake of Dharma."

"राजा (पिता) और माता (कैकेयी) की आज्ञा (नियोग) से बंधकर, धर्म की रक्षा के लिए और धर्म की ही आकांक्षा रखते हुए, मैं यहाँ वन में निवास करने आया हूँ।"
English Commentary
Rama explains the raison d'être of his exile. He frames his presence in the forest not as a misfortune, but as a deliberate act of obedience and ethical adherence. Niyogāt indicates a binding command. By mentioning both father and mother (mātuḥ), he upholds the family structure without showing resentment toward Kaikeyi. The repetition of Dharma emphasizes his motivation: he is a Dharmakāṅkṣī (one who desires righteousness). This elevates his exile from a political banishment to a spiritual mission.

यहाँ राम अपने वनवास का कारण स्पष्ट करते हैं। वे किसी अपराध या पराजय के कारण वन नहीं आए, बल्कि 'नियोगात्' (आदेश से) आए हैं। 'मातुः च यंत्रितः' (माता द्वारा नियंत्रित/वचनबद्ध) कहकर वे कैकेयी के प्रति भी अपना सम्मान और कर्तव्यबोध प्रकट करते हैं। दो बार 'धर्म' शब्द का प्रयोग—'धर्मार्थम्' (धर्म के लिए) और 'धर्मकांक्षी' (धर्म की इच्छा रखने वाला)—यह सिद्ध करता है कि राम के लिए राज्य सुख से बढ़कर पितृ-आज्ञा पालन और सत्य का मार्ग है। वे इसे कष्ट नहीं, बल्कि धर्म पालन का अवसर मानते हैं।
