त्वाम् तु वेदितुम् इच्छामि कस्य त्वम् का असि कस्य वा ।
त्वम् हि तावन्मनोज्ञांगी राक्षसी प्रतिभासि मे ॥ ॥३-१७-१८॥
Tvām tu veditum icchāmi kasya tvam kā asi kasya vā |
Tvam hi tāvanmanojñāṃgī rākṣasī pratibhāsi me ॥3-17-18॥
Translation
"But I wish to know you. Whose are you? Who are you, and to whom do you belong? Though you possess charming limbs, you appear to me to be a Rakshasi."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"परंतु मैं आपका परिचय जानना चाहता हूँ। आप किसकी (पुत्री/पत्नी) हैं? आप कौन हैं और यहाँ किसलिए हैं? यद्यपि आप सुंदर अंगों वाली प्रतीत होती हैं, फिर भी मुझे आप राक्षसी ही जान पड़ती हैं।"
English Commentary
This verse presents an interesting duality. Rama addresses Shurpanakha as Manojñāṅgī (one with charming or pleasing limbs). Given the earlier descriptions of her ugliness, this suggests that Shurpanakha, possessing the magical power of shape-shifting, likely assumed a more alluring form to approach the handsome prince, or Rama is employing a courteous irony. However, Rama’s discernment is flawless. Despite her guise, he asserts, rākṣasī pratibhāsi me ("You appear to be a Rakshasi to me"). He senses her true nature beneath the surface. It highlights that the divine intellect cannot be clouded by external illusions (Maya). He politely asks for her identity, treating her with the decorum due to a woman, yet remains fully alert to her demoniac essence.

इस श्लोक में राम की तीक्ष्ण दृष्टि और शिष्टाचार दोनों का संगम है। यद्यपि पिछले श्लोकों में शूर्पणखा के वास्तविक कुरूप रूप का वर्णन था, यहाँ राम उसे 'मनोज्ञांगी' (सुंदर अंगों वाली) कहते हैं। इसके दो अर्थ हो सकते हैं: या तो शूर्पणखा ने 'कामरूपिणी' होने के कारण अपना रूप बदल लिया था, या राम व्यंग्य (Sarcasm) और शिष्टाचार के मिश्रण का प्रयोग कर रहे हैं। इतनी प्रशंसा करने के बाद भी, राम तुरंत उसकी वास्तविकता पहचान लेते हैं—'राक्षसी प्रतिभासि मे' (तुम मुझे राक्षसी प्रतीत होती हो)। यह दर्शाता है कि मायावी रूप राम की अंतर्दृष्टि को धोखा नहीं दे सकता। वे सौंदर्य के आवरण के पीछे छिपी तामसिक ऊर्जा को भांप लेते हैं।
