इह वा किम् निमित्तम् त्वम् आगता ब्रूहि तत्त्वतः ।
सा अब्रवीत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा राक्षसी मदन अर्दिता ॥ ॥३-१७-१९॥
Iha vā kim nimittam tvam āgatā brūhi tattvataḥ |
Sā abravīt vacanam śrutvā rākṣasī madana arditā ॥3-17-19॥
Translation
"Or for what reason have you come here? Tell me the truth." Hearing these words, the demoness, tormented by love (Madana), spoke.

"अथवा, आप यहाँ किस कारण से आई हैं? मुझे सत्य बताएँ।" राम के ये वचन सुनकर काम-पीड़ित उस राक्षसी ने बोलना आरम्भ किया।
English Commentary
Rama reiterates his demand for the truth with the phrase brūhi tattvataḥ. He probes the motive behind her presence in such a dangerous forest. The narration then shifts focus to Shurpanakha’s internal state, describing her as madana arditā (tormented or crushed by Cupid/Lust). This affliction is the driving force of the narrative here. It blinds her to the danger of revealing too much and emboldens her to speak. The juxtaposition is stark: Rama is calm, rational, and truth-seeking, while Shurpanakha is agitated, irrational, and driven by carnal impulse. This sets the stage for her boastful and ill-fated proposal.

राम पुनः सत्य पर जोर देते हैं—'ब्रूहि तत्त्वतः' (तत्वतः/सच-सच कहो)। वे जानते हैं कि वन में एक अकेली स्त्री का आना सामान्य नहीं है। दूसरी पंक्ति में शूर्पणखा की मनोदशा का वर्णन 'मदन अर्दिता' (कामदेव द्वारा पीड़ित) के रूप में किया गया है। यह वाक्यांश महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यह शूर्पणखा के अगले संवादों की पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करता है। वह किसी कूटनीतिक कारण से नहीं, बल्कि विशुद्ध वासना के वशीभूत होकर अपना परिचय दे रही है। उसकी बुद्धि काम के अधीन हो चुकी है, इसलिए वह बिना किसी संकोच के अपनी शक्ति और कुल का बखान करती है, यह सोचकर कि इससे राम प्रभावित होंगे।
