अरण्यम् विचरामि इदम् एका सर्व भयंकरा ।
रावणो नाम मे भ्राता यदि ते श्रोत्रम् आगतः ॥ ॥३-१७-२१॥
Araṇyam vicarāmi idam ekā sarva bhayaṃkarā |
Rāvaṇo nāma me bhrātā yadi te śrotram āgataḥ ॥3-17-21॥
Translation
"I roam this forest alone, striking terror into all. Ravana is my brother—if indeed his name has reached your ears."

"मैं अकेले ही इस वन में विचरती हूँ और सभी के लिए भय का कारण हूँ। रावण मेरा भाई है—यदि उसका नाम आपके कानों तक पहुँचा हो (सुना हो)।"
English Commentary
Here, Shurpanakha attempts to seduce Rama through intimidation and status. By stating she roams alone and is sarva bhayaṃkarā (terrifying to all), she declares her independence and dominance over the forest hierarchy. She then plays her strongest card: her lineage. Invoking Ravana’s name is meant to establish her supreme aristocracy among demons. The clause "if his name has reached your ears" is rhetorical arrogance; she assumes Ravana's fame is universal. She is trying to frame a potential alliance with her not just as a romantic union, but as a political connection to the most powerful force in the world.

शूर्पणखा यहाँ अपनी शक्ति और कुल का प्रभाव जमाना चाहती है। 'एका सर्व भयंकरा' (अकेली ही सबको डराने वाली) कहकर वह यह जताना चाहती है कि उसे किसी रक्षक की आवश्यकता नहीं है, वह स्वयं शक्ति का केंद्र है। इसके बाद वह अपना 'ब्रह्मास्त्र' छोड़ती है—अपने भाई रावण का नाम। 'यदि ते श्रोत्रम् आगतः' (यदि तुमने सुना हो) में एक अहंकार छिपा है; उसका मानना है कि रावण का नाम तो तीनों लोकों में प्रसिद्ध है, इसलिए राम का उसे न जानना असंभव है। वह सोचती है कि रावण के नाम से राम भयभीत हो जाएंगे या प्रभावित होकर उसे स्वीकार कर लेंगे।
