तान् अहम् समतिक्रान्ता राम त्वा पूर्व दर्शनात् ।
समुपेता अस्मि भावेन भर्तारम् पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥ ॥३-१७-२४॥
Tān aham samatikrāntā rāma tvā pūrva darśanāt |
Samupetā asmi bhāvena bhartāram puruṣottamam ॥3-17-24॥
Translation
"Surpassing them all, O Rama, having seen you for the first time, I have approached you with the intention of choosing you, the best of men, as my husband."

"हे राम! उन सभी (भाइयों) से बढ़कर (या उनकी परवाह न करके), मैं आपको पहली बार देखते ही, पुरुषोत्तम मानकर, पति रूप में प्राप्त करने की भावना से आपके पास आई हूँ।"
English Commentary
Here lies the core of her proposition. The phrase tān aham samatikrāntā suggests she considers herself superior to her brothers or is acting independently of their authority to choose her own mate. She flatters Rama by calling him Puruṣottama (Supreme Man). She admits that her desire was instantaneous upon seeing him (pūrva darśanāt). She approaches him bhāvena (with deep feeling/passion) to make him her bhartā (husband). This verse illustrates her boldness; she does not wait to be courted but claims the man she desires, asserting her agency as a powerful female Rakshasa.
