Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इति एवम् उक्तः काकुत्स्थः प्रहस्य मदिर ईक्षणाम् ।
इदम् वचनम् आरेभे वक्तुं वाक्य विशारदः ॥ ॥३-१७-२९॥
Iti evam uktaḥ kākutsthaḥ prahasya madira īkṣaṇām |
Idam vacanam ārebhe vaktum vākya viśāradaḥ ॥3-17-29॥
Translation
Thus addressed, Kakutstha (Rama), who was skilled in speech, laughed and began to speak these words to her whose eyes were intoxicated (with lust).

इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर, वाणी में निपुण (वाक्य विशारद) काकुत्स्थ (राम) ने उस मदमस्त नेत्रों वाली (राक्षसी) को देखकर हँसते हुए यह वचन कहना आरम्भ किया।
English Commentary
Rama’s reaction establishes his superiority over the situation. Instead of fear or disgust, he responds with laughter (prahasya). He is described as vākya viśāradaḥ (expert in speech/eloquent), implying that what follows is a calculated play of words rather than a simple rejection. Shurpanakha is described as madira īkṣaṇām—her eyes glazed with the intoxication of lust. Rama sees her not as a threat, but as a deluded figure to be managed with wit. His laughter signals the beginning of a comedic interlude amidst the tension.

यहाँ राम की प्रतिक्रिया भय या क्रोध की नहीं, बल्कि हास्य की है ('प्रहस्य' - हँसकर)। उन्हें 'वाक्य विशारद' कहा गया है, जिसका अर्थ है वाणी के मर्मज्ञ। राम समझ जाते हैं कि इस स्थिति को बल से नहीं, बल्कि बुद्धि और विनोद से संभाला जा सकता है। शूर्पणखा के लिए 'मदिर ईक्षणाम्' (मदिरा जैसी नशीली या मदमस्त आँखों वाली) विशेषण का प्रयोग किया गया है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि वह काम के नशे में चूर है। राम का हँसना उनके आत्मविश्वास और स्थिति पर पूर्ण नियंत्रण को दर्शाता है।
