दीप्तास्यम् च महाबाहुम् पद्म पत्रायत ईक्षणम् ।
गज विक्रांत गमनम् जटा मण्दल धारिणम् ॥ ॥३-१७-७॥
dīptāsyam ca mahābāhum padma patrāyata īkṣaṇam |
gaja vikrānta gamanam jaṭā maṇdala dhāriṇam ॥3-17-7॥
Translation
(She saw him) with a radiant face, mighty arms, eyes broad like lotus petals, possessing the majestic gait of an elephant, and wearing a coil of matted hair.

(उसने देखा कि) उनका मुख कांतिमय है, भुजाएं विशाल हैं, नेत्र कमल की पंखुड़ी जैसे विस्तृत हैं, उनकी चाल हाथी के समान मदमस्त है और वे जटाओं का मंडल धारण किए हुए हैं।
English Commentary
This description is filtered through Shurpanakha's gaze. She catalogs his physical attributes: the glowing face (diptasyam), the protective power of his arms (mahabahum), and the beauty of his eyes. The mention of gaja vikranta gamanam (elephant-like gait) implies royalty and virility. Interestingly, she notices the jata (matted hair) of an ascetic, but instead of deterring her, the contrast between his ascetic attire and his physical perfection intensifies her attraction.

यह श्लोक शूर्पणखा की दृष्टि (point of view) से राम का वर्णन है। वह राम के सौंदर्य पर मोहित हो रही है। 'दीप्तास्यम्' (दमकता चेहरा) और 'महाबाहुम्' (विशाल भुजाएं) पौरुष के प्रतीक हैं। यद्यपि राम बैठे हैं (जैसा कि श्लोक 3 में कहा गया), फिर भी 'गज विक्रांत गमनम्' (हाथी जैसी चाल) का उल्लेख या तो उनके सामान्य व्यक्तित्व के लिए है, या शूर्पणखा ने उन्हें पहले चलते हुए देखा होगा। जटाधारी होते हुए भी राम का आकर्षण कामदेव जैसा है।
