एनाम् विरूपाम् असतीम् करालाम् निर्णत उदरीम् ।
भार्याम् वृद्धाम् परित्यज्य त्वाम् एव एष भजिष्यति ॥ ॥३-१८-११॥
Enām virūpām asatīm karālāām nirṇata udarīm । Bhāryām vṛddhām parityajya tvām eva eṣa bhajiṣyati ॥ ॥3-18-11॥
Translation
Abandoning this ugly, ignoble, terrifying, pot-bellied, and old wife (Sita), he will certainly devote himself only to you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इस कुरूप, दुष्ट, भयानक, पिचके हुए पेट वाली और बूढ़ी पत्नी (सीता) को त्यागकर वे (राम) केवल तुम्हें ही स्वीकार करेंगे।
English Commentary
This verse contains intense irony and sarcasm. Lakshmana describes Sita—who is renowned for her divine beauty and virtue—using derogatory terms like virūpā (ugly), vṛddhā (old), and karālā (terrifying). By projecting Shurpanakha's own attributes onto Sita, Lakshmana feeds the demoness's delusion that she is superior. He assures her that Rama will abandon Sita for her. While humorous to the reader who knows Sita's beauty, this is a dangerous game within the narrative. It reveals the inability of the wicked (represented by Shurpanakha) to perceive the truth; she readily accepts the insult of the Divine Mother because it suits her ego.

यह श्लोक लक्ष्मण के व्यंग्य का शिखर है। वे जानबूझकर सीता माता—जो सौंदर्य और शील की प्रतिमूर्ति हैं—के लिए उन विशेषणों का प्रयोग करते हैं जो वास्तव में शूर्पणखा के लिए उपयुक्त हैं (जैसे कुरूप, कराल, वृद्ध)। वे कहते हैं कि राम सीता को 'विरूपा' (कुरूप) मानकर छोड़ देंगे और शूर्पणखा के सौंदर्य को चुनेंगे। लक्ष्मण यहाँ 'विपर्यय' अलंकार का प्रयोग कर रहे हैं, जहाँ बात को उल्टा कहा जाता है। यह शूर्पणखा के अहंकार को हवा देता है क्योंकि वह अपनी राक्षसी तामसिक बुद्धि के कारण सत्य और व्यंग्य में अंतर नहीं कर पाती। वह यह मान बैठती है कि लक्ष्मण सत्य कह रहे हैं कि सीता उसके सामने तुच्छ हैं।
