इति सा लक्ष्मणेन उक्ता कराला निर्णत उदरीम् ।
मन्यते तत् वचः सत्यम् परिहास अविचक्षणा ॥ ॥३-१८-१३॥
Iti sā lakṣmaṇena uktā karālā nirṇatodarī । Manyate tat vacaḥ satyam parihāsa avicakṣaṇā ॥ ॥3-18-13॥
Translation
Addressed thus by Lakshmana, that terrifying, pot-bellied one, being unskilled in understanding humor, believed his words to be true.

लक्ष्मण के द्वारा ऐसा कहे जाने पर, वह भयानक और पिचके पेट वाली राक्षसी (शूर्पणखा), जो परिहास (मजाक) को समझने में असमर्थ थी, उनके वचनों को सत्य मान बैठी।
English Commentary
The narrator (Valmiki) provides crucial insight into Shurpanakha's psyche here. She is described as parihāsa-avicakṣaṇā—lacking the discernment to understand irony or humor. Because she is blinded by lust and arrogance, she takes Lakshmana's sarcastic praise literally. This highlights a spiritual truth: those dominated by tamas (darkness/ignorance) and ego cannot perceive reality accurately. They interpret the world only through their desires. This misunderstanding is pivotal; believing she is truly desirable to Rama and that Sita is the only obstacle, she resolves to remove that obstacle physically.

वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ शूर्पणखा के चरित्र का एक महत्वपूर्ण दोष उजागर करते हैं—'परिहास अविचक्षणा' अर्थात जिसे हंसी-मजाक या व्यंग्य की समझ न हो। तामसिक और अहंकारी व्यक्ति अक्सर सूक्ष्म हास्य को समझने में असमर्थ होते हैं क्योंकि वे आत्म-मुग्धता (self-obsession) में लिप्त रहते हैं। शूर्पणखा को अपनी कुरूपता का भान नहीं है, इसलिए उसे लक्ष्मण की झूठी प्रशंसा सत्य प्रतीत होती है। यह श्लोक कथा में एक मोड़ (turning point) है। यदि उसमें विवेक होता, तो वह अपमान समझकर चली जाती या लक्ष्मण पर आक्रमण करती, किन्तु सीता को प्रतिद्वंद्वी मानकर उसने अपना क्रोध सीता की ओर मोड़ दिया।
