अद्य इमाम् भक्षयिष्यामि पश्यतः तव मानुषीम् ।
त्वया सह चरिष्यामि निःसपत्ना यथा सुखम् ॥ ॥३-१८-१६॥
Adya imām bhakṣayiṣyāmi paśyataḥ tava mānuṣīm । Tvayā saha cariṣyāmi niḥsapatnā yathā sukham ॥ ॥3-18-16॥
Translation
Today, while you look on, I shall devour this human woman. Then, free from a rival, I will roam about happily with you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आज मैं तुम्हारे देखते-देखते इस मानवी (सीता) को खा जाऊँगी। फिर सौत (सपत्नी) से रहित होकर तुम्हारे साथ सुखपूर्वक विचरण करूँगी।
English Commentary
The tone shifts abruptly from courtship to cannibalistic threat. Shurpanakha declares her intent to eat Sita immediately (adya) and in front of Rama (paśyataḥ tava). This reflects the impatient and violent nature of the Rakshasa race—if a desire is obstructed, eliminate the obstruction. She envisions a future where she is niḥsapatnā (without a co-wife/rival), roaming freely with Rama. This moment triggers the mutilation of Shurpanakha, which serves as the root cause (bīja) for the abduction of Sita and the great war that follows.

यहाँ शूर्पणखा का वास्तविक राक्षसी रूप प्रकट होता है। जब अनुनय-विनय विफल हो जाता है, तो राक्षस हिंसा पर उतर आते हैं। 'भक्षयिष्यामि' (खा जाऊँगी) शब्द उसकी क्रूरता को दर्शाता है। वह सीता को केवल मार्ग की बाधा मानती है। 'निःसपत्ना' (बिना सौत के) शब्द उसकी मंशा को स्पष्ट करता है—वह राम पर एकाधिकार चाहती है। यह श्लोक रामायण की दिशा बदल देता है; अभी तक यह केवल संवाद था, लेकिन अब यह सीता के जीवन पर सीधा संकट बन गया है, जिसके कारण लक्ष्मण को शस्त्र उठाना पड़ता है।
