Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
क्रूरैः अनार्यैः सौमित्रे परिहासः कथंचन ।
न कार्यः पश्य वैदेहीम् कथंचित् सौम्य जीवतीम् ॥ ॥३-१८-१९॥
Krūraiḥ anāryaiḥ saumitre parihāsaḥ kathaṃcana । Na kāryaḥ paśya vaidehīm kathaṃcit saumya jīvatīm ॥ ॥3-18-19॥
Translation
O gentle son of Sumitra! One should never engage in joking of any kind with cruel and ignoble people. Look, Vaidehi (Sita) has barely survived by some chance.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौम्य सुमित्रानंदन! क्रूर और नीच (अनार्य) व्यक्तियों के साथ कभी भी किसी प्रकार का परिहास (मजाक) नहीं करना चाहिए। देखो, वैदेही (सीता) किसी तरह बड़ी मुश्किल से जीवित बच पाई हैं।
English Commentary
In this verse, Rama imparts a crucial lesson on social interaction and diplomacy regarding the wicked. He admonishes Lakshmana, stating that humor and wit are wasted on the Anarya (ignoble/uncultured) and Krūra (cruel). Such individuals lack the refinement to distinguish between jest and reality, often reacting with disproportionate violence. Rama points to Sita's narrow escape as tangible proof of this error. By addressing Lakshmana as Saumya (gentle one), Rama corrects him without harshness, emphasizing that dealing with base natures requires caution and directness, not playfulness. This marks a shift from the light-hearted banter of the previous verses to the grim reality of the threat they face.

श्री राम यहाँ लक्ष्मण को एक गंभीर नीतिगत शिक्षा दे रहे हैं। यद्यपि लक्ष्मण का उद्देश्य केवल उस राक्षसी को टालना था, किन्तु राम स्पष्ट करते हैं कि 'अनार्य' (जिनमें श्रेष्ठ संस्कार और नैतिकता नहीं है) और 'क्रूर' स्वभाव वाले लोग हास्य को नहीं समझते। वे परिहास को अपमान या प्रोत्साहन मान लेते हैं, जिसका परिणाम घातक हो सकता है। राम 'पश्य वैदेहीम्' कहकर लक्ष्मण का ध्यान सीता की ओर आकर्षित करते हैं, जो अभी-अभी मृत्यु के मुख से बची हैं। यह श्लोक राम के संयम और दूरदर्शिता को दर्शाता है। वे लक्ष्मण को डांटते नहीं हैं, बल्कि 'सौम्य' (कोमल स्वभाव वाले) कहकर संबोधित करते हैं और भविष्य के लिए सतर्क करते हैं कि दुष्टों के साथ केवल गंभीरता से ही व्यवहार करना चाहिए।
