निकृत्त कर्ण नासा तु विस्वरम् सा विनद्य च ।
यथा आगतम् प्रदुद्राव घोरा शूर्पणखा वनम् ॥ ॥३-१८-२२॥
Nikṛtta karṇa nāsā tu visvaram sā vinadya ca । Yathā āgatam pradudrāva ghorā śūrpaṇakhā vanam ॥ ॥3-18-22॥
Translation
Her ears and nose severed, that terrible Shurpanakha, screaming discordantly, fled back into the forest the way she had come.

नाक और कान कट जाने पर वह भयानक शूर्पणखा, बेसुरे स्वर में चीखती हुई, जिस रास्ते से आई थी, उसी रास्ते से वन की ओर भाग खड़ी हुई।
English Commentary
The narrative captures the immediate aftermath of the punishment. Shurpanakha, now physically marred, retreats into the wilderness. The term visvaram implies a discordant, unearthly scream that reflects both her physical pain and shattered ego. She flees yathā āgatam (by the path she came), returning to her source of power to seek retribution. This moment signifies the release of evil back into the world, but now it is an evil marked by vengeance. The description reinforces her monstrous nature, which has now been stripped of any illusion of beauty she attempted to project earlier.

शूर्पणखा की स्थिति का भयानक चित्रण यहाँ किया गया है। जो कुछ क्षण पहले प्रणय निवेदन कर रही थी, वह अब 'निकृत्त कर्ण नासा' (कटे हुए कान-नाक वाली) होकर 'विस्वरम्' (भयानक/बेसुरा) नाद कर रही है। उसका वन की ओर भागना उसकी पराजय और अपमान का प्रतीक है। 'यथा आगतम्' (जैसे आई थी) वाक्यांश यह संकेत देता है कि वह अपने मूल स्थान (जनस्थान) की ओर सहायता के लिए दौड़ी है। उसका 'घोरा' (भयानक) रूप अब और भी वीभत्स हो गया है। यह दृश्य वन की शांति को भंग करने वाली अराजकता की वापसी को दर्शाता है।
