सा विरूपा महाघोरा राक्षसी शोणित उक्षिता ।
ननाद विविधान् नादान् यथा प्रावृषि तोयदः ॥ ॥३-१८-२३॥
Sā virūpā mahāghorā rākṣasī śoṇita ukṣitā । Nanāda vividhān nādān yathā prāvṛṣi toyadaḥ ॥ ॥3-18-23॥
Translation
That ugly and terribly terrifying demoness, drenched in blood, roared various sounds like a rain-cloud in the monsoon season.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह कुरूप और अत्यंत भयानक राक्षसी, खून से लथपथ होकर, वर्षा ऋतु में गरजते हुए बादल के समान अनेक प्रकार के भयंकर नाद (गर्जना) करने लगी।
English Commentary
The imagery here is visceral and auditory. Shurpanakha is described as virūpā (deformed) and śoṇita ukṣitā (bathed in blood). Her roaring is compared to a toyadaḥ (cloud) in the prāvṛṣi (monsoon season), suggesting a deep, rumbling, and pervasive sound that fills the forest. This simile highlights her immense demonic energy; even in injury, she is loud and formidable, not weak. Her cries are not just sobs of pain but thundering declarations of her presence and her plight, intended to summon her kin for war.

वाल्मीकि जी शूर्पणखा की पीड़ा और क्रोध को व्यक्त करने के लिए प्रकृति के उपमानों का प्रयोग करते हैं। 'शोणित उक्षिता' (खून से सनी हुई) शूर्पणखा की गर्जना की तुलना 'प्रावृषि तोयदः' (वर्षा ऋतु के बादल) से की गई है। जैसे मानसून के बादल जोर-जोर से गरजते हैं, वैसे ही वह वन को गुंजायमान कर रही है। यहाँ 'विविधान् नादान्' (अनेक प्रकार के शब्द/रोना) बताता है कि उसकी आवाज में केवल दर्द नहीं, बल्कि प्रतिशोध की हुंकार और विलाप का मिश्रण है। यह वातावरण में आने वाले तूफान (युद्ध) का पूर्व-संकेत (foreshadowing) है।
