सा विक्षरंती रुधिरम् बहुधा घोर दर्शना ।
प्रगृह्य बाहू गर्जन्ती प्रविवेश महावनम् ॥ ॥३-१८-२४॥
Sā vikṣarantī rudhiram bahudhā ghora darśanā । Pragṛhya bāhū garjantī praviveśa mahāvanam ॥ ॥3-18-24॥
Translation
Shedding blood profusely in many streams, terrifying to behold, and raising her arms while roaring, she entered the great forest.

अनेक धाराओं में रक्त बहाती हुई, वह भयानक दिखने वाली (राक्षसी), अपनी दोनों भुजाएं उठाकर गरजती हुई उस महावन में प्रविष्ट हुई।
English Commentary
The visualization of Shurpanakha continues as she retreats deep into the Mahāvanam. The phrase bahudhā rudhiram (blood in many ways/streams) emphasizes the severity of Lakshmana's strike. Her action of raising her arms (pragṛhya bāhū) while roaring adds to the drama—it is a gesture of distress and a call to arms. She is now ghora darśanā (terrible to look at) in truth, stripping away all her earlier disguises. This marks her transition from a solitary wanderer back into the fold of the Rakshasa community, carrying the catalyst for their destruction with her.

इस श्लोक में शूर्पणखा की शारीरिक चेष्टाओं का वर्णन है। 'प्रगृह्य बाहू' (भुजाएं उठाकर) भागना एक ओर उसकी असहायता को दिखाता है, तो दूसरी ओर यह सहायता पुकारने या प्रतिशोध की शपथ लेने की मुद्रा भी हो सकती है। 'विक्षरंती रुधिरम् बहुधा' का अर्थ है कि घाव गहरे हैं और रक्त की कई धाराएं बह रही हैं। वह 'महावनम्' (घने जंगल) में प्रवेश करती है, जहाँ उसके भाई खर और दूषण का शिविर है। उसका यह भयानक रूप और गर्जना वन के अन्य जीवों के लिए भी आतंक का कारण बन गई होगी। यह दृश्य भय और करुणा (राक्षसी के प्रति नहीं, बल्कि स्थिति की गंभीरता के प्रति) का मिश्रण है।
