कथम् दासस्य मे दासी भार्या भवितुम् इच्छसि ।
सो अहम् आर्येण परवान् भ्रात्रा कमल वर्णिनी ॥ ॥३-१८-९॥
Katham dāsasya me dāsī bhāryā bhavitum icchasi । So aham āryeṇa paravān bhrātrā kamala varṇinī ॥ ॥3-18-9॥
Translation
O lotus-complexioned one, why do you wish to become the wife of a servant and thereby a servant yourself? I am indeed dependent on my noble brother, who is my master.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे कमल के समान वर्ण वाली! मुझ दास की पत्नी बनकर तुम दासी क्यों बनना चाहती हो? मैं तो स्वयं अपने बड़े भाई, जो कि मेरे स्वामी हैं, के अधीन हूँ।
English Commentary
In this verse, Lakshmana displays his quick wit and diplomatic skills. Instead of outrightly rejecting the demoness Shurpanakha with aggression, which might provoke an immediate attack, he uses logic rooted in social hierarchy. By declaring himself a 'dasa' (servant) to Rama, he argues that marrying him would lower her status to that of a servant's wife. This appeals to her pride and desire for power. The address 'Kamala varnini' (one with the complexion of a lotus) is heavily ironic, given her grotesque appearance described in earlier verses. Lakshmana engages in a playful yet tactical deflection, adhering to his dharma of serving Rama while managing the threat before him without immediate violence.

लक्ष्मण जी यहाँ अपनी वाकपटुता और धर्म-परायणता का परिचय देते हैं। शूर्पणखा के प्रस्ताव को अस्वीकार करने के लिए वे सीधे मना करने के बजाय तर्क का सहारा लेते हैं। वे स्वयं को राम का 'दास' बताते हैं, जो तकनीकी रूप से सत्य है क्योंकि वे राम की सेवा में समर्पित हैं, लेकिन यहाँ इसका प्रयोग शूर्पणखा को हतोत्साहित करने के लिए किया गया है। लक्ष्मण उसे समझाते हैं कि यदि वह उनसे विवाह करेगी, तो राजसी सुख भोगने के बजाय उसे भी 'दासी' बनना पड़ेगा। 'कमल वर्णिनी' जैसे विशेषण का प्रयोग यहाँ व्यंग्यात्मक (sarcastic) है, क्योंकि शूर्पणखा का रूप डरावना था, परन्तु लक्ष्मण उसे बातों में उलझाए रखने के लिए उसकी झूठी प्रशंसा कर रहे हैं। यह श्लोक लक्ष्मण की उपस्थिति-बुद्धि (presence of mind) को दर्शाता है।
