इति भ्रातुर् वचः श्रुत्वा क्रुद्धस्य च विशेषतः ।
ततः शूर्पणखा वाक्यम् सबाष्पम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥३-१९-१३॥
Iti bhrātur vacaḥ śrutvā kruddhasya ca viśeṣataḥ । Tataḥ śūrpaṇakhā vākyam sabāṣpam idam abravīt ॥ ॥3-19-13॥
Translation
Hearing those words of her brother who was especially enraged, Shurpanakha then spoke these words, choked with tears.
हिंदी अनुवाद
क्रोध से भरे हुए अपने भाई (खर) के ऐसे वचन सुनकर, शूर्पणखा ने आँखों में आँसू भरकर यह बात कही।
English Commentary
This verse highlights Shurpanakha's manipulative emotional intelligence. Seeing Khara already enraged, she seizes the opportunity to fuel his anger further by presenting herself as a helpless victim. The term sabāṣpam (with tears) is crucial; it signifies her strategy to appeal to Khara’s protective instincts as a brother rather than presenting a logical case. By weeping, she bypasses rational inquiry into her own fault in the incident. This moment serves as the catalyst for the upcoming conflict, as her tears effectively weaponize Khara’s strength against Rama and Lakshmana. It illustrates how personal grievance, when manipulated, can lead to large-scale destruction.
