गन्धर्व राज प्रतिमौ पार्थिव व्यन्जन अन्वितौ ।
देवौ वा दानवौ - मानुषौ - वा तौ न तर्कयितुम् उत्सहे ॥ ॥३-१९-१६॥
Gandharva rāja pratimau pārthiva vyanjana anvitau । Devau vā dānavau - mānuṣau - vā tau na tarkayitum utsahe ॥ ॥3-19-16॥
Translation
They resemble kings of Gandharvas and possess royal insignias. I am unable to determine whether they are Devas (gods), Danavas (demons), or humans.

वे गन्धर्वराज के समान लगते हैं और राजलक्षणों से युक्त हैं। मैं यह निश्चय नहीं कर पा रही हूँ कि वे देवता हैं, दानव हैं, अथवा मनुष्य हैं।
English Commentary
Shurpanakha’s confusion serves to elevate the stature of Rama and Lakshmana. Comparing them to Gandharva Rajas highlights their ethereal beauty, while parthiva vyanjana refers to the physical marks of sovereignty (such as the lines on the palms or feet) indicative of emperors. Her inability to categorize them—questioning if they are gods, demons, or men—suggests that their presence transcends normal human limitations. This ambiguity adds a layer of supernatural dread to her report. Even in her pain, she acknowledges an aura about them that defies simple classification, warning Khara that he faces an enigma.

शूर्पणखा का भ्रम राम और लक्ष्मण के अलौकिक तेज को दर्शाता है। 'पार्थिव व्यन्जन' का अर्थ है शरीर पर राजचिह्न (जैसे रेखाएं और शारीरिक गठन) जो एक चक्रवर्ती राजा के होते हैं। जंगल में रहते हुए भी उनका तेज गन्धर्वों जैसा है, जो अपनी सुंदरता के लिए प्रसिद्ध हैं। शूर्पणखा कहती है कि वह तर्क (अनुमान) नहीं कर पा रही है कि वे कौन हैं। यह कथन खर के मन में अनिश्चितता और क्रोध दोनों उत्पन्न करता है। यह वाल्मीकि जी की शैली है जो यह दिखाती है कि राम का व्यक्तित्व शत्रुओं को भी विस्मित कर देता है, चाहे वे शत्रु कितने ही क्रूर क्यों न हों।
