Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मानुषौ शस्त्र सम्पन्नौ चीर कृष्ण अजिन अंबरौ ।
प्रविष्टौ दण्डकारण्यम् घोरम् प्रमदया सह ॥ ॥३-१९-२२॥
Mānuṣau śastra saṃpannau cīra kṛṣṇa ajina aṃbarau । Praviṣṭau daṇḍakāraṇyam ghoram pramadayā saha ॥ ॥3-19-22॥
Translation
(Khara commanded them): "Two humans armed with weapons, wearing bark and black deerskin, have entered the terrible Dandaka forest accompanied by a woman."

(खर ने उन राक्षसों से कहा): "दो मनुष्य, जो शस्त्रों से युक्त हैं और वल्कल तथा काले मृगचर्म पहने हुए हैं, एक स्त्री के साथ इस घोर दंडकारण्य में प्रविष्ट हुए हैं।"
English Commentary
This verse constitutes Khara's mission briefing to his hit squad. He identifies the targets based on Shurpanakha’s description: humans, armed, wearing ascetic garb. By emphasizing that they have entered the ghoram (terrible/dense) Dandaka forest with a woman, Khara highlights their audacity—trespassing into Rakshasa territory where humans usually fear to tread. He views this not just as a personal vendetta for his sister, but as a territorial violation. The descriptor shastra sampannau (equipped with weapons) is the only tactical warning he gives, acknowledging they are not defenseless hermits.

यह श्लोक खर द्वारा चौदह राक्षसों को दिया गया 'ब्रीफिंग' (निर्देश) है। वह उन्हें 'मानुषौ' (दो मनुष्य) कहकर संबोधित करता है, जिससे उसकी उपेक्षा का भाव प्रकट होता है। हालाँकि, वह यह भी नोट करता है कि वे 'शस्त्र सम्पन्नौ' (हथियारों से लैस) हैं। 'घोरम् दंडकारण्यम्' का उल्लेख यह बताता है कि यह क्षेत्र राक्षसों का गढ़ है और यहाँ मनुष्यों का प्रवेश अनाधिकार चेष्टा है। खर का आदेश स्पष्ट है—घुसपैठियों को खत्म करना। वह शूर्पणखा के विवरण के आधार पर उन्हें लक्ष्य की पहचान बता रहा है।
