कः कृष्ण सर्पम् असीनम् आशी विषम नागसम् ।
तुदति अभिसमापन्नम् अंगुलि अग्रेण लीलया ॥ ॥३-१९-३॥

Who is it that, having approached death, playfully prods with the tip of his finger a sitting black cobra, guiltless and filled with venom in its fangs?

वह कौन है जो फन में विष भरे हुए, बैठे (विश्राम करते) हुए और निरपराध काले नाग को, मृत्यु के समीप पहुँचकर भी, अपनी उंगली की नोक से खेल-खेल में छेड़ रहा है?
English Commentary
Khara employs a deadly metaphor here, equating himself and his kin to a resting black cobra (kṛṣṇa sarpam). He characterizes the person who harmed Shurpanakha as suicidal, someone who foolishly prods a venomous snake with a finger tip (aṅguli agreṇa). By using the word anāgasam (blameless/innocent) for the snake, Khara reveals his distorted worldview where the demons are the victims, despite their atrocities. This rhetorical question highlights his arrogance; he cannot conceive that anyone would willingly provoke him unless they had a death wish. It sets the stage for the inevitability of his retribution.
