पर स्पर्शात् तु वैदेह्या न दुःखतरम् अस्ति मे ।
पितुर् विनाशात् सौमित्रे स्व राज्य हरणात् तथा ॥ ॥३-२-२१॥
para sparśāt tu vaidehyā na duḥkhataram asti me । pitur vināśāt saumitre sva rājya haraṇāt tathā ॥ ॥3-2-21॥
Translation
O Saumitri, nothing is more painful to me than the touch of a stranger upon Vaidehi—neither the death of my father nor the seizure of my own kingdom.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौमित्र (लक्ष्मण)! पर-पुरुष द्वारा वैदेही (सीता) का स्पर्श किए जाने से मुझे जो दुःख हो रहा है, वह मेरे पिता के विनाश (मृत्यु) और मेरे राज्य के हरण से भी बढ़कर है।
English Commentary
This is a definitive verse for Rama’s character hierarchy. He explicitly ranks the violation of Sita’s person ('para sparśāt' - touch of another) as a grief surpassing the loss of his crown ('rājya haraṇāt') and even the death of King Dasharatha ('pitur vināśāt'). This establishes that for Rama, the protection and honor of his wife are paramount, overriding political and familial calamities. It highlights the intensity of his possessiveness and love for Sita, and the acute shame he feels as a Kshatriya unable to protect her at that moment.
