Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तिष्ठत एव अत्र संतुष्टा न उपवरितितुम् अर्हथ ।
यदि प्राणैः इह अर्थो वो निवर्तध्वम् निशा चराः ॥ ॥३-२०-१०॥
tiṣṭhata eva atra saṃtuṣṭā na upavarititum arhatha । yadi prāṇaiḥ iha artho vo nivartadhvam niśā carāḥ ॥ ॥3-20-10॥
Translation
Stay right there, do not attempt to advance further. If you value your lives (if you have a purpose with your lives), O night-rangers, turn back!
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम लोग यहीं (स्थिर) रहो, आगे बढ़ने का साहस मत करो। यदि तुम्हें अपने प्राण प्रिय हैं (प्राणों से प्रयोजन है), तो हे निशाचरों! यहीं से लौट जाओ।
English Commentary
This is Rama's ultimatum. He draws a line in the sand, commanding them to 'Stay right there' ('tishthata eva atra'). It demonstrates his reluctance to kill unnecessarily; he offers them a chance to retreat. The condition 'if you value your lives' ('yadi pranaih iha artho vo') implies absolute certainty in his own victory if engagement occurs. It is a display of supreme confidence without arrogance. Rama is acting as a guardian of the threshold; crossing it means death. This verse encapsulates the warrior code where the opponent is given a fair warning before the lethal strike is dealt, balancing mercy with martial resolve.

यह श्लोक राम की अंतिम चेतावनी है। 'तिष्ठत एव अत्र' (यहीं रुक जाओ) एक राजा की आज्ञा जैसा स्वर है। राम उन्हें एक अवसर दे रहे हैं कि वे युद्ध से बच सकें। 'यदि प्राणैः इह अर्थो वो' (यदि तुम्हें प्राण प्यारे हैं) कहकर वे स्पष्ट कर रहे हैं कि उनसे युद्ध करने का परिणाम केवल मृत्यु है। यह राम की दयालुता और आत्मविश्वास दोनों को दर्शाता है। वे रक्तपात के लिए लालायित नहीं हैं, किन्तु यदि शत्रु सीमा लांघता है, तो वे पीछे भी नहीं हटेंगे। 'निशा चराः' संबोधन उनके रात्रि में विचरण करने वाले और तामसिक स्वभाव को इंगित करता है। यह श्लोक युद्ध-नीति के अंतर्गत अंतिम चेतावनी (Ultimatum) का कार्य करता है।
