Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मूहूर्तम् भव सौमित्रे सीतायाः प्रत्यनंतरः ।
इमान् अस्या वधिष्यामि पदवीम् आगतान् इह ॥ ॥३-२०-४॥
Muhūrtam bhava saumitre sītāyāḥ pratyanantaraḥ । Imān asyā vadhiṣyāmi padavīm āgatān iha ॥ ॥3-20-4॥
Translation
O Saumitri (Lakshmana), be the personal guard of Sita for a moment. I shall kill these (demons) who have come here following her path.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौमित्र (लक्ष्मण)! तुम क्षण भर के लिए सीता के रक्षक बनो। मैं इसके (शूर्पणखा के) मार्ग का अनुसरण करके यहाँ आए हुए इन राक्षसों का वध करूँगा।
English Commentary
Rama issues a tactical command. Instead of asking Lakshmana to fight alongside him, he assigns him the role of pratyanantarah (immediate guard/protector) for Sita. This prioritizes the non-combatant's safety above all else. Rama asserts vadhishyami (I shall kill) in the singular, declaring his intention to handle the threat solo. This shows supreme confidence in his own martial ability against fourteen opponents. The phrase padavim agatan implies the demons have tracked them down via Shurpanakha; Rama intends to sever this threat immediately and personally.

राम यहाँ एक स्पष्ट रणनीतिक निर्णय लेते हैं। वे लक्ष्मण को युद्ध करने के बजाय सीता की रक्षा ('प्रत्यनंतरः' - निकट रक्षक/bodyguard) का कार्य सौंपते हैं। यह लक्ष्मण के संयम की परीक्षा है, क्योंकि लक्ष्मण स्वभाव से उग्र हैं और युद्ध करना पसंद करते हैं। राम कहते हैं 'वधिष्यामि' (मैं वध करूँगा) - एकवचन का प्रयोग बताता है कि वे अकेले ही उन 14 राक्षसों के लिए पर्याप्त हैं। 'पदवीम् आगतान्' का अर्थ है वे जो शूर्पणखा के पदचिह्नों या रास्ते पर चलकर यहाँ आए हैं। राम का आत्मविश्वास और सीता की सुरक्षा के प्रति उनकी प्राथमिकता यहाँ स्पष्ट है।
