एवम् आधर्षितः शूरः शूर्पणख्या खरः ततः ।
उवाच रक्षसाम् मध्ये खरः खरतरम् वचः ॥ ॥३-२२-१॥
evam ādharṣitaḥ śūraḥ śūrpaṇakhyā kharaḥ tataḥ |
uvāca rakṣasām madhye kharaḥ kharataram vacaḥ ॥3-22-1॥
Translation
Thus provoked by Shurpanakha, the valiant Khara then spoke extremely harsh words in the midst of the demons.

शूर्पणखा द्वारा इस प्रकार धिक्कारे जाने पर, शूरवीर खर ने तब राक्षसों के बीच (शूर्पणखा से) अत्यंत कठोर (तीखे) वचन कहे।
English Commentary
The word 'Adharshitah' is pivotal here, implying being provoked through insult or censure. Shurpanakha’s questioning of Khara’s masculinity and ability to protect his kin wounded his ego deeply. Being a 'Shura' (valiant warrior), he could not tolerate the insinuation of weakness. The phrase 'Kharah kharataram vacah' employs a poetic play on words—Khara (the person) spoke words that were 'Kharatara' (sharper or harsher). This marks a shift in his demeanor from a ruler to an enraged avenger. Speaking amidst the assembly of demons ('Rakshasam madhye') serves to publicly reclaim his authority and reassure his subjects of his dominance after his sister's humiliating outburst.
