तत् प्रयातम् बलम् घोरम् अशिवम् शोणित उदकम् ।
अभ्यवर्षत् महा मेघः तुमुलो गर्दभ अरुणः ॥३-२३-१॥
tat prayātam balam ghoram aśivam śoṇita udakam |
abhyavarṣat mahā meghaḥ tumulo gardabha aruṇaḥ ॥3-23-1॥
Translation
As that terrible army marched forth, a massive, tumultuous cloud, reddish like a donkey, rained down inauspicious blood-water upon it.

उस भयानक सेना के प्रस्थान करते ही, गधे के समान लाल रंग वाले एक विशाल और उग्र बादल ने उस पर अमंगलकारी रक्त-मिश्रित जल की वर्षा की।
English Commentary
Sarga 23 opens with a series of ominous portents ('Nimitta') accompanying the army's march. Nature itself rebels against the demons. A cloud described as 'Gardabha arunah' (reddish-grey like a donkey) appears—a color associated with fierce, unnatural storms. The rain of 'Shonita udakam' (blood-water) is a classic epic omen signifying imminent slaughter and catastrophe. The word 'Ashivam' (inauspicious) underscores that the cosmic order is disturbed. These signs serve as a divine warning, foreshadowing that the march towards Rama is a march towards their own doom.

यहाँ से 23वां सर्ग आरंभ होता है, जो अपशकुनों (Bad Omens) पर केंद्रित है। प्रकृति खर के विनाश का संकेत दे रही है। 'गर्दभ अरुणः' (गधे जैसा लाल/धूसर रंग) बादल अत्यंत अशुभ माना जाता है। 'शोणित उदकम्' (खून का पानी) बरसना आसन्न मृत्यु और व्यापक नरसंहार का सबसे बड़ा अपशकुन है। 'अशिवम्' (अमंगलकारी) शब्द स्पष्ट करता है कि यह वर्षा जीवनदायी नहीं, बल्कि मृत्युसूचक है। वाल्मीकि जी ने पर्यावरण के माध्यम से यह दर्शाया है कि धर्म के विरुद्ध जाने पर प्रकृति भी चेतावनी देती है, जिसे अहंकार में डूबा खर अनदेखा कर देता है।
